Non-Fiction Writing BINGO

Updated: Apr 22, 2020

This is a really great activity for when your student is perhaps having a little more trouble settling into learning time. This is a fun game that your student can enjoy playing while also learning more about the features in non-fiction writing. The focus of this lesson will be solely written non-fiction so students are able to identify the text features being used.

Print of a BINGO card from the following link:

Have your student fill in each of the spaces on the card with features of non-fiction text as well as other familiar text features, vocabulary words, etc.

If your student is struggling with the text feature of non-fiction writing focus on one or two terms at a time, filling the rest with other possibilities. For example, "3 different types of punctuation", "5 sentences that start with the letter 'S'", "A photo with a caption", "A map", etc.

Then have your students choose a piece of non-fiction writing to read. As they read they can hunt for the various prompts on their BINGO card. If the student is able to find, as mentioned above, 5 sentences that start with the letter 'S', then they would mark off that block in their card.

You and your child can choose what the winning card will look like prior to beginning the game.

This is a great activity to help your child really focus in on not only what is being said in the piece they are reading but also how it is being presented.

Materials Needed:

- Printer (if you want to print the card)

- Markers

- Non-Fiction text of your choosing
